  • Carpal fractures are uncommon in children

  • Scaphoid fracture is the most common but still <1% of all upper limb fractures

MANAGEMENT

  • If tender Anatomical Snuff box treat as scaphoid fracture and immobilise in thumb spica (splint or cast) with fracture clinic follow up.

Carpal Bone Ossification​ by Age

Capitate: 3-4 months

Hamate: soon after 3-4 months

Triquetrium: 2-3 years

Lunate: 4 years

Scaphoid: 4-5 years (begins distally)

Trapezoid: 6 years

Pisiform: 9 years
