Distal Fibula Physeal Fracture
Salter Harris I distal fibula fractures are the most common ankle fractures.
Unfortunately often missed or misdiagnosed as sprain.
Tenderness is directly over lateral malleolus not ligaments.
MANAGEMENT
-
Analgesia
-
Undisplaced SH I and II fractures.
-
Below knee backslab
-
Non weight bearing
-
Fracture clinic
-
Minimally displaced SH 1 distal fibula fracture
REFER ORTHO if:
-
Salter Harris III or IV
-
Displaced and reduction not possible or adequate in the ED
-
Extreme swelling/compartment syndrome
-
Open Fracture
-
Neurovascular injury
